Oh yessss. I remember that. I think we even had a thread about it here. Geez, that sucked. How demeaning.

I don't see where anybody actually made that assertion.
No, not here. Just sort of the accepted notion in society that being a man means you were born to lead (ie, George W. and the complete unquestioning of his capabilities because he was a strong cowboy--that type of thing).

Did Clarence Thomas advance the cause of black politicians? I'm not sure how he helped. Sarah Palin is the female Clarence Thomas--obsessed with rightwingnut politics, claiming sexism/racism while gaining the support of sexists and racists, and offered up as tokens for a Republican Party that needs more minorities/women, especially the token kind. Are those two candidates "good" for the cause of their respective interest groups? I'm unsure how one justifies a "yes" answer.

Do conservatives like CT? Are liberals now not supporting black judges because of CT? How, precisely, has CT hurt other black judges?

No, I doubt SP will cause liberals to back away from women at any level of government. My point addresses the Republican Party. Did Clarence Thomas do black Republicans any favors? I don't think he has promoted a wider acceptance of that party in the black community. I don't think he has made black Republicans any more respected at the judicial or any other level among liberals. In fact, CT's gross lack of experience coupled with his alleged sexual harassment of Anita Hill has reinforced the old "Uncle Tom" image that black politicians fought for years to alter.

Likewise, Sarah Palin reinforces the unfortunate stereotype of Republican women as lightweight, undereducated leaders focused on family issues to the near exclusion of others. SP crudely showcased her own "traditional" family at the Republican Convention only to have that same family adorn the covers of tabloids magazines when the reality overcame the myth. Does this hurt Democratic women like Nancy Pelosi? No. Does it hurt savvy, intelligent, highly educated moderate Republican women like the recently defeated New York congressional Republican nominee Dede Scozzafava? I believe so. Not having a bipartisan group of such women is definitely a minus for women in American politics.

You mean the kind of candidate women would like to have a beer with?

Manise, what do you mean by a bipartisan group of such women?

I'm pretty sure she (he? I just realized I'm not certain of manise's gender) meant that the Democrats have plenty of intelligent, competent women running for office, where the Republicans are running Palins and Bachmanns, and that it hurts women overall to not have intelligent representation on both sides of the aisle.
Eminently practical and yet appropriate as always.

Apparently, Palin supporters don't really know why they support her, nor what she stands for, besides "drill baby, drill."

No, they don't. They don't understand (or care about) where she stands on any issues, and they don't think it matters, anyway.
