But how many male politicians are "cringeworthy"?

Why the double standard for women?

Some men are oxygen thieves and so are some women.

I think McCain chose Palin to try to get the vote of people like me: The Hillary supporter.

I was insulted by that, personally. Like a true Hillary supporter would even consider her.

I totally agree. I just think that there MUST be far more worthy women who COULD have been picked to run for VP - I do think it is a double standard - absolutely unfair, but unfortunately one stupid woman like her, as woman are underrepresented in politics, tends to have more of a negative effect on all women in politics, than the many idiot male politicians.

    Totally agree

Funny story, I heard Tina Fey tell on a you tube clip. She said one thing her and Sarah Palin had in common was that the porn star Lisa Ann had parody'd both of them in porn movies (Lisa Ann did a sarah palin and a 30 rock porn parody), and of the three of them, Lisa Ann knew the most about foreign policy

    It's funny cause its true

As long as only a certain type of woman is good for politics, women will continue to be marginalized. About half the people in this country are women. Until our politicians represent that fact visibility is important.
My issues is that Sarah Palin appears to be a stereotypical "dumb broad". She's quite pretty, but it is abundantly clear from her frequent deer in the headlights look that she has no bloody clue what's going on.

I LOVE smart women in politics. Hillary Clinton? Condolezza Rice? Madeline Albright? WONDERFUL. Sarah Palin? Yeah. She's not helping things along. She got thrown on the ticket so the 'pubs had a "minority" on the ticket.

There's not a double standard, per se, but a matter of exposure. A dippy male congressman from Nevada isn't going to get 1/10th of the media exposure Sarah Palin is getting. He's not novel. I think a great majority of male politicians are, indeed, cringeworthy, but if you couple Sarah Palin's lack of knowledge with the media's inclination to cover her and you have a real mess.

I see Neroli's point about Palin--that female "visibility" in politics helps all women in the long run. As disgusting and moronic as Palin is, she gave female politicians the opportunity to oppose one of "their own." Women debating women (or attacking them) at the highest levels of government removes another barrier of difference between the sexes. Blacks achieved the same milestone when conservatives and liberals within their own ranks ran and debated against each other at every level of office.

At the same time, I think Palin did women no favors by hauling her family through the political swamp to gain votes. No male politician would do that. The move backfired as Palin's family became a tabloid editor's wet dream. Will voters hold all women accountable for this and other mistakes? I don't know. Personally I wish she would join a moose herd and guard Alaska from Russian attack. Instead, she appears on Oprah.

I think men and women who are (or present themselves to be) ignorant or uneducated about issues in which they SHOULD be educated will be mocked and scorned (think Dan Quayle, in addition to Palin). That said, I think it is sad that one of the few females to make it to that level of politics wasn't a better representation of what women could be (smart, educated, well spoken).

With which political demographic has SP "set women back" in politics? Moderate male conservative? Liberal women? Neocons? Which group is going to be the ones that don't vote for women because SP is a dumbass?
