Back when I dated, the guy always paid. I did offer but none of them said yes that I recall. Maybe a few times I paid for drinks at the bar.

Now I would definitely want to go Dutch or trade off.

A guy I work with is engaged and his fiancee is seriously loaded. He pays for everything. Even vacations. He's mentioned it has caused him financial issues. I keep my mouth shut.

Somewhete before engagement should come conversations about money, especially if their habits are causing him financial hardship.

My oldest dd insists on paying her way from the get go. My younger dd has a boyfriend who pays. Whatever works. Dh and I have our own accounts/money. Whoever wants to, grabs the check. Not a biggie.

When I was dating, the guy paid. Honestly if I wasn't very interested, it made me uncomfortable.

One thing I will say, is that it is *much* easier in Texas to request separate checks in a restaurant. Even my book club where there will be at least 10 of us...everyone requests and gets their own check. Which I love.

For those that have separate bank accounts from their spouse - how do bills work? What about retirement planning?
Does one partner make significantly more than the other?
DH and I just put everything all into the same account. I don't understand how that would work...?
or should I start a new thread?

    Agree!
Life may not be the party we hoped for...but while we are here, we might as well dance!

My husband and I have a joint "house fund", from which the mortgage and any major household expenses are paid. We have our own chequing/savings accounts, retirement accounts, and credit cards.

I pay household bills from my account.

DW describes it very simply..."What's mine is mine. What's yours is mine." Simple, clear guiding principles work the best.
