Will the US Government Punish Turkey for Attacking US Citizens? Is this a breech of US National Sovereignty? ~ nam

A foreign dictator seems to have ordered his goons to attack Americans on American soil.

The protesters were no where close to Turkish President Erdoğan at the time he appears to have given his guards the go ahead to assault a crowd gathered across the street from the Turkish embassy.

For those who cannot watch, the video shows a body guard talking to Erdoğan, who is sitting in the backseat of the car. At the end of the conversation, the guard signals to the rest of the security complement to attack. Violence immediately ensues.

Erdogan Security Forces Launch ‘Brutal Attack’ on Washington Protesters, Officials Say
    May 17, 2018

    New York Times

WASHINGTON — Supporters of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey, including his government security forces and several armed individuals, violently charged a group of protesters outside the Turkish ambassador’s residence here on Tuesday night in what the police characterized as “a brutal attack.”

Eleven people were injured, including a police officer, and nine were taken to a hospital, the Metropolitan Police chief, Peter Newsham, said at a news conference on Wednesday. Two Secret Service agents were also assaulted in the melee, according to a federal law enforcement official.

The State Department condemned the attack as an assault on free speech and warned Turkey that the action would not be tolerated. “We are communicating our concern to the Turkish government in the strongest possible terms,” said Heather Nauert, a State Department spokeswoman.

A group of Republican lawmakers went a step further, calling the episode an “affront to the United States” and calling for Turkey to apologize.

No excuse for this. Some action should be taken. Wish I knew what.

We should demand that Turkey Waive the diplomatic immunity for the perpetrators, and they should face an American trial and jail time and penalties.
    But it will never happen.

Yeah, that won't happen. It would be valid to ask Turkey to recall their diplomat and body guarfs though. We don't have to let them stay and keep breaking our laws, do we?

Turkish Guards Will Be Charged in Embassy Protest, Officials Say
    June 14, 2017
    Nicholas Fandos
    New York Times

Coming almost a month after the episode, the charges are the most significant retaliatory step taken to date by American authorities, who have fumed privately and publicly over what they see as a highly offensive attack on free speech — not to mention American law enforcement.

WASHINGTON — Law enforcement officials plan to announce charges Thursday against a dozen members of the Turkish president’s security detail for their involvement in a brutal attack on protesters outside the Turkish ambassador’s residence here last month, two American officials said on Wednesday.

The authorities have already charged several others, including two Americans and two Canadians, with taking part in the violent skirmish.

The Washington police have been investigating the May 16 attack along with the State Department and the Secret Service. The police planned to announce the charges at a news conference on Thursday morning, according to the two officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the charges before they were made public.

Washington police officials confirmed that the two Americans are Sinan Narin, of Virginia, and Eyup Yildirim, of New Jersey. Mr. Narin was charged with felony and misdemeanor assault. Mr. Yildirim, who can be seen on video repeatedly kicking a protester, was charged with two felony counts and one misdemeanor assault count. The two did not immediately return calls on Wednesday requesting comment.
