Message For @realDonaldTrump: It's Still The Economy, Stupid

President Trump finds himself embroiled in a number of controversies at the moment. Blame whomever you want for the scandal-of-the-day, someone needs to tell Trump that the only thing he should be talking and tweeting about is getting the economy back on track.
Yes, there have a been some good economic reports recently. Industrial output rose sharply in April, the Federal Reserve said on Tuesday. The 1% monthly gain was the biggest jump in more than three years. And unemployment dropped last month to the lowest it's been since 2007. Surveys of businesses show them to be optimistic.
But GDP growth in the first quarter was a mere 0.7%. And as we noted when the April jobs data came out, "the labor force participation rate actually fell to 62.9% as 162,000 people left the workforce, and we're still at the lowest level since 1979. Since the supply of labor is about 100,000 a month, that means more people are leaving the workforce than entering." We noted that there are still millions of people on the sidelines who would return to work if jobs were available.
There are other mixed signals. Retail sales were slightly weaker than expected, new-home construction fell for the second month in a row.
"The data in the first quarter, particularly March, was weak, and the market was expecting the April data to improve. While it's improving, it's not improving by as much as the market was expecting," Thanos Vamvakidis, head of global G-10 currency strategy at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, told CNBC.
The IBD/TIPP Economic Optimism Index dropped in May to 51.3. It had been 56.4 in February.
Polls also show that public approval of Trump's handling of the economy has sagged since he took office. One aggregation of various polls shows that the public is now evenly split on the issue, where Trump had enjoyed an 11-point favorable margin.
The various scandals are also taking Washington's eye off the economy, where there should be a sense of urgency behind Trump's pro-growth tax cuts and the repeal of ObamaCare. Instead, neither the House nor the Senate have anything substantive on the agenda this week.
Since much of the optimism was built on the expectation that the inveterate deal-maker Trump could get the pro-growth job done, if he and the Republican leadership in Congress can't, the backlash could be devastating.
The other reason for Trump to stay focused on the economy is that when he does, he gets more popular. The reason Trump won the election in the first place was because he was able to connect with the millions of middle-class families who suffered the brunt of President Obama's tax-spend-and-regulate agenda. He is never more convincing than when he is focused on jobs and growth.

He needs to shut the fuck up and get off twitter. Even his own party is telling him that.

He is an overgrown adolescent with a giant ego and an impulse control problem. He also lies his ass off, many times when it isn't even necessary to do so. Of all the world leaders, he is most like Kim of North Korea. Maybe that's why he went on record saying that he would be "honored" to meet Kim.

There needs to be a tech person on trump's staff who creates an alternate hidden twitter page, redirects trump's account to only post to the fake page, and then creates a host of fake people to interact on the fake page. That way he can have his toddlerish rants, get the satisfa tion of "likes" and retweets, yet not have his foolishness on display for all the world to see.

Agreed. But they also need some random librul-bots to smack him down from time to time lest his delusions grow even greater.

We do have a couple of former members who could rock the whole creating fake people and interacting on the fake twitter part. Hmmm...
