Anyone ever hear of the Brown Headed Cowbird?

Apparently it is a obligate brood parasitic species that lays it eggs in other bird's nest in the hopes that they will rear the young. A Cowbird has deposited an egg in my hanging basket in a House Finch's nest. Unfortunately, their offspring is not likely to survive as their diet is different from the House Finch, but I am curious to see how this plays out.

One of these things is not like the others...

I do fear that the Finch have abandoned their eggs, though, as I have not seen them at all today. We get them every year, usually just 2 or 3 eggs. This would have been a big brood.

I've heard of them; not sure I've seen them around here, though.

There's a pair of cardinals in our neighbourhood, and they've come to our feeder a few times recently. I love them. And yesterday there was a Baltimore oriole in our maple tree!

Not very effective parasites if they choose a host that won't actually raise their young. Sounds like an evolutionary dead end, although they must survive somehow.

The Wild Kratts talk about them in an episode. I'll have to show my kids your photo!

Well, my daughter has offered to take "maternity leave" from school to raise the Brown Headed Cowbird.

Good news, I saw the Finch last night after K got home from karate, so they are still there.

Hmmm ...... I think we have some Cow Bird parents among our school population, too.
