Here's a question - would a digital oven thermometer work for cold food, too?

It should be the kind that you can stick into the food. I have one of these but one of these or these would be perfectly adequate.

I probably should be a little more paranoid. :) Then I wouldn't have to censor myself when I'm doing things with the Extension.

I have a stomach made of iron. We have left food out on the counter for hours and I still put in the fridge and eat it as leftovers. There is no way I'd be pitching scalloped potatoes and ham!

I also had the misfortune of a father who was a USDA Inspector, I grew up on food prep horror stories. My house may be dusty, but my kitchen is CLEAN

Well, maybe I won't...I'll just wait until DH eats it. If he suffers no ill effects, we'll be good to go

I wouldn't throw out either. Everything that's going to go off in the potatoes (ie the milk/butter) has been cooked and if you re-heat it really hot it should be fine. And if the deli can leave sandwich meats sitting out in a barely refrigerated thingy I would think ham would be fine. It's all nitrated up for your safety ;)

Yeah I wouldn't throw away, but I'm pretty meh about that stuff. I figure if I can eat a ham sandwich that has sat in a lunchbox for hours, it's all good.

Yeah, I wouldn't throw it out either. However, never, ever eat leftover crab rangoon. Trust me....
