    Church Can Start Its Own Police Force, Alabama Senate Says

    Church Can Start Its Own Police Force, Alabama Senate Says

    A large church in Alabama is one step closer to creating its own police force, a move that seems to be without precedent in the U.S. The state's Senate has approved legislation that would give church police officers the same powers other law enforcement officers have in Alabama.

    After being approved by Alabama's Senate on a 24-4 vote, the bill now heads to the state House of Representatives, where an identical bill was sent to the Public Safety and Homeland Security committee in February.

    Both chambers' legislation specifically names Briarwood Presbyterian Church, a Birmingham megachurch that "says it needs its own police officers to keep its school as well as its more than 4,000 person congregation safe," Alabama Public Radio reports.

    <snip>
    While churches have been known to form their own watch programs to enhance security and safety in North Carolina and elsewhere, an NPR search for any previous instances of a U.S. church forming its own police force turned up no results Wednesday.

    So this is the start of guns in church and school? Fun. Especially when Jim Bob manages to forget his weapon on the toilet right before the Sunday school class visits the potty.

    Is this like a cult compound? I am a little lost as to why they require a police force, and not a security detail.
    Seems a little scary to me.

    It's a mega church they probably have a giant campus and businesses connected to the church. If they are pretty big they might consider themselves like college campuses that have police officers
    Opportunities are usually disguised as hard work, so most people don't recognize them.

    What's wrong with having a security force like everyone else? Why does it have to be an actual police force with the same power and rights as the police themselves? Are these people going to have to attend the police academy and get the same training as the real police, or are we going to have a bunch of yahoos running around with badges and guns?

    Why do colleges have their own police forces?

    For what it's worth, the Hasidim in Brooklyn essentially run their own police, though they call it a security force.

    That would be my guess - if they're an actual police force, they'll have to go to some sort of police academy. Our county police department is huge, and when they hire a new class, they also train about 10-12 guys from assorted little police departments. But this scenario is somewhat different because presumably their entire jurisdiction is private property.

    Which brings up another issue - if they now have police jurisdiction over that church and that school, then will the regular cops still have it or not? i.e., say you have a big pedophile case allegedly occurring in the new school/church jurisdiction. Complainant doesn't want to go to church cops because the chief is the offender's brother. Can Birmingham city police handle it, like with college police, or is it out of their jurisdiction, like say, a reservation?
