My 9 and 10 year old nieces love The Warrior Cats.

By the same writer is the Seekers series, which my DD fell in love with at about that age.

My ten year old took this request seriously, as befits her position in her school's "Library Squad".

She really loves Warrior Cats, she also suggested The Mark of the Dragonfly, the 39 Clues series (by Rick Riordan who wrote the Percy Jackson series), The Guardian Herd, The Maze Runner and Pennyroyal Academy.

My kids loved Pennyroyal Academy, too. I'll have to hunt down the others!

By the same writing consortium, you mean! Those books are hugely popular and just terribly written.

Did anyone mention Enola Holmes? I love that series.

I know you said no fantasy but Angie Sage's Septimus Heap books are fabulous. I will second the Green Glass Sea - it's about a girl growing up at Los Alamos during the Manhattan Project. The City of Ember is good too.
