If my hypothetical husband bought a motorcycle, he would probably put on a helmet to drown out the sound of my bitching about it. I hate motorcycles. Obviously, I can't force a grown up to do what they don't want to do but I would make damn sure he knew I didn't like it.

We live on a windy mountain road that is considered somewhat of a mecca for motorcyclists. We have several deaths a year and many many horrible wrecks. All were wearing helmets. After everything we've seen, I'd be beyond pissed, but not sure what I could do besides appeal to his sense of responsibility re: our kids?

I read the question and my answer aloud to M and he said "why isn't your first response to look at me and say 'who ARE you'"?

Well, I'd be pissed if he made that big of a purchase without discussing it because it's just something we do. But I would draw the line at not wearing a helmet. It's the helmet and safety gear or it's me.

We just both bought motorcycles this summer, so that I don't have an issue with, but if you don't care enough about me or our family to at least attempt to protect yourself, then clearly we don't have the relationship I thought we had and I'd be gone.

Might want to throw some extra disability insurance in with that life insurance. They don't always die in the crashes.
My phone rang after I posted and this thought popped into my head.

I feel like I should add that DH does have a motorcycle and always wears a helmet and protective gear. We have friends who live in SC, where you do not have to wear a helmet and the husband does not. We think it's a pretty dumb thing to do.

No but I am his spouse who wants him around a long time. Wanting to keep my partner safe is not being his mommy.

I would think my husband was having some kind of crisis if he bought a motorcycle but assuming it was in character for him we would have a serious talk about helmet wearing and our future as a couple if he couldn't respect that one tiny wish.

For the final guilt nail in the coffin I would also ask him to please think about the first responders who arrived at the scene of an accident and had to see his brains all over the road and what that would do to them.

I know lots of motorcycle drivers and most of them are very responsible and I don't worry about their skills. I do worry about the cars around them however.
